How to charge your EV

EV charging made simple for apartments, hotels, and HOAs. Learn how to use Tesla Universal Wall Connectors at Plug IO properties.

Tesla Universal Wall Connectors

Tesla Universal Wall Connectors (also called Universal EV Chargers) are the ultimate solution for multi-unit properties. One charger works for every EV in North America — Tesla and non-Tesla alike — thanks to the built-in native NACS (Tesla) plug and integrated J1772 adapter.

Charging options

Two ways to charge — choose what fits your vehicle

For non-Tesla EVs (J1772 legacy ports)
  1. Locate the J1772 adapter on the Universal Wall Connector.
  2. Press the black button on the adapter to release the J1772 handle.
  3. Open your EV’s charging port.
  4. Plug in the J1772 connector.
  5. Open the Tesla app (download from Apple Store or Google Play) → create or log into your account and add a payment method.
  6. Charging starts automatically once authenticated.
  7. To stop: press the button on the handle and unplug.
  8. Return the connector to the holster after use.

For Tesla vehicles (NACS — true plug & charge)

The simplest charging experience available:

  1. Pull up and plug in — no app or card needed.
  2. Your Tesla automatically connects, authenticates, and starts charging.
  3. Walk away — charging begins instantly.
  4. Unplug when done (press the button on the handle to release).
  5. Return the connector to the holster after use.
  6. Pro tip: Tesla owners can monitor and schedule charging directly in the Tesla app.
Quick tips for property managers
  • Payment: Non-Tesla users need a Tesla account with a credit card. Tesla owners often charge seamlessly.
  • Speed: Up to 48 amps / ~44 miles of range per hour (depending on vehicle and installation).
  • Safety: Always ensure the cable is properly stored after use. The charger is weatherproof and built for daily high-use environments.
